My only digital class turns out to be the one that focuses most heavily on true traditional illustration. Which means I should probably learn some traditional techniques. My first attempt with gouache (courtesy of a few tips I found on my usual nemesis-the internet). This was for practice and tomorrow I'll apply it to my much larger homework assignment.
